Cortel Guide to Going Abroad

Whether you are off on holiday or going overseas for work commitments, using your Mobile Phone, BlackBerry and Mobile Broadband device while abroad is just as necessary as in the UK. Please see below for the Cortel guide to ensure that your trip is a hassle free and cost effective one.

First Steps

Before you leave, you must ensure that you contact Cortel to lift your international and roaming bars on your mobile number(s). Whilst doing this, our team will also be able to advise you on all costs for calls in the country that you are visiting. They will also be able to assist with available options, that can help reduce costs whilst roaming.

To use Voicemail abroad you must set up its security PIN before you leave.
Call 121 and follow the instructions to do this.

Make a note that to call the UK you must replace the first 0 with +44.

Using Mobile Data Abroad

In recent times, it has also become clear that using the internet abroad is now as essential as making a call. Our customer service team have full knowledge on data roaming and will be able to help to avoid you getting excessive bills when accessing the internet, sending/receiving emails and using data-based applications when abroad. Some helpful guidelines are listed below:

  • Daily data allowances are not suitable for downloading movies or episodes of TV shows, streaming TV or downloading music. 50MB is approximately 100 emails or 4 hours web browsing.
  • The billing system measures data usage in 1 byte steps. When you start using data you will automatically be charged the mininum charge.

There are further bundle options available for regular travellers, both for handset data and Mobile Broadband, to help reduce costs. Should you require full information on these, please contact Cortel Customer Services. If any of the options were required, the customer service team would need to be notified in advance of your travel date, to add the bundles on at Network level.

From July 1st, 2010 Vodafone has introduced new roaming charges when using handset data and Mobile Broadband abroad. In addition to this, Vodafone will text notifications to customers when they use their data abroad to advise on their usage. In addition to this, a Data Roaming cap has also been introduced. This cap has been set at £34 (excluding VAT), to help prevent overspending while abroad. Free text alerts will be sent when a user is 80% and 100% through their monthly spend cap.

Once the cap limit is reached an automatic data roam bar will be applied, and the user will not be able to use any more data abroad for the remainder of their monthly billing cycle. The cap applies to data roaming in Europe Zone 1 only - Users can continue to data roam in Zone 2 without a cap.

Once you have reached the cap spend limit and need to continue using data whilst roaming in Europe Zone 1, text STOP to 40209 or alternatively call Cortel on 020 7247 0101.

Handset Data Costs Abroad

The following roaming charges relate to using a mobile phone to access the internet, send/receive emails and using data-based applications when abroad. Should you have a Roaming Data bolt-on, these charges will come into effect should you exceed your inclusive roaming allowance.

  Charge
Europe 0.85p per MB for first 5MB, then £4.25 for every additional 5MB
Rest of World £3.00 per MB for the first 5MB then £15 for every additional 5MB

Mobile Broadband Costs Abroad

The following roaming charges relate to all Mobile Broadband tariffs. Mobile Broadband tariffs that have inclusive roaming data will experience these charges should they use more than their inclusive roaming allowance:

Charge
Europe £8.50 per 50MB then £8.50 for every additional 50MB
Rest of World £25.50 per 50MB then £25.50 for every additional 50MB
  • Charges for roaming are separate to domestic data charges. Domestic data allowances apply in the UK only.
  • Calendar day is midnight-to-midnight UK GMT/BST time.
  • Daily data allowances are not suitable for downloading movies or episodes of TV shows, streaming TV or downloading music. 50MB is approximately 100 emails or 4 hours web browsing. Downloading music and movies, streaming TV programmes and file sharing will all use a lot more than 50MB of data.
  • The billing system measures data usage in 1 byte steps. When you start using data you will automatically be charged the mininum charge of £1 for the first MB of usage in Europe or £3 in Rest of World. If you exceed that MB by 1 byte, i.e 1.1MB the next £1 charging step will apply in Europe or £3 in Rest of World.
